Five Year Retention Plan: Appendix B
Mandate from the Vice Chancellor and Provost, 1999

Vice Chancellor and Provost Deborah Freund designated the Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Studies and Retention and the Retention Council to establish and oversee a five-year plan to improve the University's overall graduation rate. In response, a Steering Committee was formed and charged to develop the appropriate objectives for, and to establish the process whereby, the Council would implement the plan.

OBJECTIVES

The Steering Committee has identified the following objectives for the University's five-year retention plan:

  • To increase overall graduation rates as well as increase graduation rates for specific subgroups within the undergraduate population.

  • To identify subgroups of students for near-term intervention and to present an appropriate plan for this intervention.

  • To identify schools and colleges with high attrition rates and propose strategies for improving graduation rates.

  • To develop a standardized institution-wide system for understanding the reasons why students leave the University.

  • To determine, in particular, appropriate strategies for responding to third- and fourth-year attrition rates.

  • To promote a combination of enhanced institutional quality and more revenue from improved retention.
