I. Announcements

  • Smith/Wells - Discussed panel presentation on black student retention given to Student African American society. Referenced Journal of Blacks in Higher Education-Summer 02 issue. All Council members will be sent a copy.

  • Smith - Introduced Associate Vice President Donald Saleh as a new member of the Retention Council.

  • Minutes from October 2, 2002 were passed with minor revisions.

II. Update on Revision to Mid-Semester Progress Reports

  • Shelly - Proposal to add to mid-semester progress reports a way to identify high achieving students.

  • Richardson - Must be cautious about how the questions are worded. Might do damage.

  • Shelly - This will not be a part of student report but rather to s/c.

  • Potter - Enthusiastic about being able to identify high achievers early.

  • Hurd - Need extensive faculty input. How many stars = a star-How many Us. Vs Ss.

  • Olivette - How much, at this point, will we know from this that we wouldn't already know from entry characteristics?

  • Shelly - Operating hypothesis is that there are many students who don't have high entry characteristics that are doing very well.

  • Potter - Faculty concerned about volume of uncoordinated student info.

  • Spina - Recommends consideration of adding 2nd year students to mid-term progress reports.

  • Breed - Cautious that return rate of mid-term progress reports is mid-70's%.

  • Potter - Recommends joint ACC/Council sub-committee on mid-term progress reports.

III. Update on Learning Communities Assessment

  • Yonai, Hurd, and Terra Peckskamp (Asst. Director, ORL) presented status of Learning Community Assessment.

  • Donovan - Did we accommodate all students who wanted Learning Communities?

  • Peckskamp - Most students who wanted a Learning Community got one.

  • Saleh - Based on 1998 cohort data current graduation rate would be projected to around 71%.

  • Yonai - Yes, although this does not include late certification, and those students that may return to complete.

  • Donovan - How are students chosen for NSSE (National Survey of Student Engagement) participation.

  • Yonai - NSSE randomly samples from population we supply.

  • Grassi - Report suggests caution is interpreting data give small numbers and the context in which learning communities operate.

  • Yonai - Agrees.

  • Hurd - Some things are not reasonably comparative between community and non-community because these experiences are particular to Learning Communities.

  • Clark - Given the apparent lack of impact are these even worth pursuing?

  • Yonai - What we don't know is how Learning Community students would report if they didn't have the experience.

  • Clark - My point is, absent more data, Learning Communities don't seem to have significant impact.

  • Yonai - Bear in mind NSSE is just one measure and retention/performance are not the sole measure of success. Quality of experience and how much it improves has not really been studied.

IV. Impact of Student's Use of Alcohol and Other Drugs on Retention.

  • Dessa Bergen-Cico (Assoc. Dean of Students) presented data on alcohol/drug abuse and resulting medical LOAs.

  • Richardson - The "N" is small.

  • Bergen-Cico - Yes, but cumulative numbers are significant.
