I. Announcements

  • Smith, H. - Announced that he has not met with the Vice Chancellor regarding the matrix of institutional retention initiatives.

II. School/College Updates:

  • Breed - Gave handout on Millennials Rising book written by William Strauss- founding member of Capital Steps. The book talks about characteristics of college generation and its impact on higher education.

  • Lori Deyo presented a retention overview for the School of Education. Leavers study suggests that students do not feel challenged enough but she feels the School of Education is perhaps too challenging. SOE has a 2.8 GPA that is a faculty requirement.

  • Gonzalez- Since certification guidelines are for New York only, what do we do with out of state students?

  • Deyo- Most states have reciprocal of NYS requirements PRAXIS. Another option is to graduate with a degree and not certification.

  • Smith, H. - Colleges and students should work cooperatively. Designs to look at issues and treat them more systematically as issue.

  • Olivette/Proud- Presented HSHP's retention efforts with handouts. The Fall '02 incoming class as of 5/9/02 is 198. Discussed the new Guided Exploration field.

  • Richardson- How many AO's come in?

  • Olivette- A high percentage of their students are AO's.

  • Yonai- Are the admissions people placing AO's to where students requested?

  • Olivette- Second wave of AO's were not handled that way. They were AO'd based on information on their application.

  • Grassi- Presented attrition and graduation rates for Newhouse. Freshman class almost never has AO's- 1000's of application for 100's of openings (need to have the right fit). Each year the admit criteria goes up. Newhouse is oversubscribed with admits this year. A small percentage of students graduate early from Newhouse.

  • Potter- Six colleges or schools are in the state of flux with interim Deans. Half are in this situation, some for up to four years. Below screen issues have affect on retention issues.

  • Richardson- Do we want all parallel items on matrix? Need to know how much information to give.

  • Smith, H. - Purpose of matrix is to give this body and central administration an idea of what we are doing relative to our goal of 80% six year graduation rate in three years. What you are achieving and how you are achieving- provide facts. What's working and what needs improving, each school has a different set initiatives for matrix, how do we anticipate improvement? More is better than less. Capture primary activities that occur and what new activities need to be put in place? Matrix is not restrictive or confined, just a guideline.

  • Council agreed to present all-school/college activities (e.g., degree audits, faculty advising) in initial matrix, then use the school/college-specific matrix for new initiatives particular to that unit.
