I. Announcements

  • Susan Donovan was introduced as a member of the Council.

  • Breed - Class/Classroom policy proposal is currently being reconsidered in committee in the Senate for a few changes. Intent is to support more inter-disciplinary course access.

  • Donovan - Short on undergraduate applications but on target for programs due to quality of pools.
    Difficult year:
    1. Last time a decline in apps - Recession year
    2. Time article - Binge drinking among women increasing

  • Wells - Introduced Marlene Hall as new council member.

II. Management Update:

  1. Planning Calendar
  2. Parent Survey
  3. Leavers
  4. Potential Leavers

Just giving the students a chance to have a conversation before making a decision helps. Confronting academic issues is easier than social problems.

(NOTE: written report distributed to all members and is included in the record. Please request an additional copy if needed.)

  • Shelly - First, doubts may be a characteristic of all students. How do we engage them around these doubts? Second, "I don't fit!" How do we address this issue?

  • Cavanagh - Could other S/C use management's model? Drinking/drugs impact on students. Substance-free floors?

  • Wells - Its an issue nationally. We have to provide an alternative social focus. How do I meet others and fit into a social group without alcohol?

  • Richardson - Perception of intellectual engagement isn't being lived up to. Partying is central…life of the mind is not.

  • Wells - What's next for Management? What's different next time?

  • Richardson - Better prepared next year and all out effort to communicate and get school culture on board with process.

  • Cavanagh - Students that are: No pays. No registrations. No participation in the housing lottery will generate a list to the schools and colleges for follow-up. All schools will be informed of students who hit these categories.

  • Wells - Judicial Affairs looped in? Make sure we aren't contacting students with judicial/medical issues?

  • Cavanagh - Consider asking parents about expectations in summer before they come.

  • Wells - Is management team satisfied with faculty feedback?

  • Richardson./Hurd - Yes, key component.

  • Donovan - Do faculty know about services/resources for student support?

  • Wells - Will provide "resources brochure for faculty" to anyone interested.

III. VPA Update

(NOTE: written report distributed to all members and is included in the record. Please request an additional copy if needed.)

Recruitment is very important
Issues:

  1. Lack of room in curriculum for academic electives for some VPA programs.
  2. Honors offerings: VPA has Honors students that can't fit honors courses into schedule because of studios, etc.

  • Grassi - Curious about socialization in VPA. Because the curriculum/groups work so closely together. The bonding is different in VPA?

  • Sutter - Yes, cohort bonding is very important.

  • Clark - Are you doing things to address "students who shouldn't be here" issues?

  • Sutter - Yes, more competitive auditions now and higher academic/high audition students.

  • Donovan - Audition process
    1. Increases bonding to school
    2. Really promotes good fit thus lower attrition

  • Shelly - We lost students who were wanting training not only professionally but also students for whom the arts were an area of avocation-dance, music, etc.

IV. University College

(NOTE: written report distributed to all members and is included in the record. Please request an additional copy if needed.)

  • Spring: 5 students transferred to UC, seniors solely for financial reasons-particularly an issue for seniors.

  • Dependent benefit admissions issue - high attrition population. Working with SAIP to provide some program support.

  • Financial Aid is key to adult learner retention

  • Students who only need 6-9 credits during last semester want UC rate.
