I. Announcements

  • Minutes form the May 7, 2003 Council Meeting were approved with corrections.

  • Saleh - Expects to have retention/attrition data for graduate students next academic year.

  • Smith - Announced reports from the Office of Disability Services (ODS), SSUI, Honors, and SummerStart next academic year.

II. Presentation of Preliminary Attrition/graduation report for fall 2002

  • Barbara Yonai presented the attrition and graduation data from Fall 2002 (Complete reports will be available later in the summer).

  • Saleh - Does the first-year dropout rate by school or college really tell us anything?

  • Neuburger - Might Arts and Sciences rate be related to a higher percentage of Undecideds?

  • Grassi - Arts and Sciences and VPA are also the largest colleges and would have correspondingly higher numbers.

  • Duah-Agyeman - Requests better attrition analysis of minorities that are not in special populations (e.g. CSTEP, HEOP).

  • Hamilton - Are the high achieving leavers a significant percentage of all high achievers?

  • Yonai - No, but they are a significant part of those that do leave.

III. Presented a study of students that indicate their ethnicity as "unspecified."

  • Grassi - Does the inception of Peoplesoft which corresponds with the jump in "unspecified" students have an impact? Are coders influencing decisions? Can we look back?

  • Yonai - there are multiple self-reported points to identify ethnicity. Even looking back would not be consistent necessarily.

  • Shelly - Do we want to pursue a multi-racial option at all our points of selection?

  • Council - Overwhelmingly favors pursuing a multi-racial option.

  • Shelly - Can we go back and look at current Unspecifieds?

  • Grassi - Suggests pulling 500 admissions applications from "unspecified" students and see of they selected multiple categories.

  • Yonai - We should also track non-residential aliens in a separate category.

  • Breed - If we are going to explore creating a multi-racial category we should look at this more broadly to study the best way to capture these data. Urges caution in pulling out non-resident aliens so they are not discounted as an important sub-population.
