Miles - Multi-cultural week at IST is ongoing. Numerous events will be held over the week. Contact Ken Miles for details.
Olivette - Announced that the open meeting for the first candidate for Director of Health Services was today, April 9th.
Smith - Congratulated Sandra Hurd on her appointment as interim dean of the School of Management.
II. Syracuse University Counseling Center: Impact on Retention
Rebecca Dayton and Chris Cederquist presented a report on the Counseling Center, its services, the demographics of the students it serves, and the Center's impact on student retention.
Duah-Agyeman/Gonzalez - Asked for a breakdown of diagnosed psychological issues by ethnicity. They raised the issue of students from different cultures accessing services.
Saleh - Are the data particular to SU or are they representative of other colleges?
Dayton/Cederquist - SU numbers are consistent with other institutions.
Yonai - Does the Counseling Center play a grief intervention role?
Dayton/Cederquist - Yes, this is a function of the center.
Potter - Is the center able to manage the volume of students seeking services (e.g., those with appointments, walk-ins, those needing extended services)?
Dayton - No, those needing longer services still are not completely having their needs met.
Dayton - Announced that the Counseling Center will be moving to a facility on Walnut.
Smith - Inquired about staffing over the summer?
Dayton - Stated that the Center is staffed in the summer.
Redmond - Some students do not want to go to Counseling Center. Can there be a referral list of off-campus services?
Dayton/Cederquist - Expressed concern about a blanket referral list without a counseling professional to supervise an appropriate referral based upon a diagnosis.
Spina - How many students are we not seeing in the data? Is this the tip of an iceberg?
Dayton/Cederquist - While no hard data exists, professional sense is that there are many students not seeking services.
Clark - Argued that some students with counseling issues leave who should. How do we account for appropriate attrition in our retention push?
Potter - Stated that counseling is not and should not be a retention agent. Retention in some cases might be an appropriate outcome but in some cases departure is appropriate.
Dayton/Cederquist - Agreed that appropriate retention is enhanced when students seek counseling services. Many students are able to cope and continue their studies because of counseling who might otherwise leave. However, those students whose health is better served by leaving the institution are appropriately addressed as well.
