I. Announcements
Arla Johnstone from Student Services in the College of Visual and Performing arts was introduced to the Council.
Smith, H. - Announced that the Center for Retention Studies was putting together a matrix of institutional retention activity to assist the Vice Chancellor in presenting to the Board of Trustees. It will also serve the dual role of providing documentation of our current progress.
Donovan - Announced that the Dean's Cabinet is studying in committee the issue of students that wish to sample courses from other schools/programs (i.e. blending). The Committee is to identify courses in each school/college that are in demand by students outside that school/college.
Richardson - Questioned the availability and source of resources to provide extra sections.
Donovan/Cavanaugh - Resources will be discussed as part of the committee's work.
II. School/College Updates:
David Potter presented the status of retention initiatives in the college of Arts and Sciences. Details will be available from the matrix to be produced by the Center for Retention Studies.
Eric Spina presented the status of retention initiatives in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. A handout from the presentation is available and will be distributed to Council members. Details of the ECS plan will be included in the matrix of institutional retention initiatives.
Grassi - Questioned how the math placement exam is different for ECS students?
Spina - Responded that ECS students are not allowed calculators, have a 90 minute time limit, and have to take a calculus readiness part of the exam other students do not. ECS believes students have been tracked into more appropriate math courses using this method.
Barbara Settel and Emileen Butler presented the status of retention initiatives in the School of Information Studies and Technology. Details of the IST plan will be available in the matrix of institutional retention initiatives.
